Jack Wall - Composer/Producer

Having established himself over the past few years as one of the prime movers of the videogame music industry, Jack Wall has built a track record and an international reputation as an A-List composer and music producer in the interactive entertainment sector. He also brings an unmatched depth of experience, credibility and knowledge in the production of records, working with mainstream artists and major label artists. His work spans full-length albums, live concert recordings, videogame soundtracks, film soundtracks and other projects that demand an exacting ear and vast library of musical and technical knowledge and know-how.

Jack Wall has built a prestigious career upon strong production values. He cut his teeth working at Synchro Sound Studios in Boston, then owned by The Cars, and Skyline Studios NYC, the home of renowned producer Nile Rodgers, where he engineered and produced records for John Cale, David Byrne, Dr. John and Patti Smith. Jack served as engineer, producer and arranger with John Cale, founding member of the seminal and highly influential band, The Velvet Underground. Together they produced film soundtracks for Basquiat featuring David Bowie and Dennis Hopper, Somewhere In the City with Sandra Bernhardt, Rhinoceros Hunting in Budapest, and House Of America. They co-produced albums and singles for cutting-edge artists such as The Jesus Lizard and The Maids of Gravity. Jack also engineered and mixed John Cale's critically acclaimed album Walking on Locusts, and produced a live recording of John Cale performing with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic Orchestra in NYC.

He has continued to exercise his ability to bring exactly the right combination of tempo and energy, as well as his unique producing, arranging and engineering skill-set, to film and videogame soundtracks, most notably for the attention-grabbing independent film War Zone and the award-winning Myst III: Exile which has become one of the most successful and talked about soundtracks in the videogames industry. Composing for and conducting a full symphony orchestra and master chorale, Jack produced music for the game that Newsweek called a "pulse-quickening orchestral score", while USA Today said, "The moody, new-age soundtrack [is] impressive". The soundtrack was nominated by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences in 2002 for "Outstanding Achievement in Musical Composition" and received "2002 Game of the Year Soundtrack Award" from the readers of Game Industry News. Most recently the Myst III: Exile main theme was featured in the trailer for the Universal Studios motion picture Peter Pan.

Jack Wall's latest projects include the next instalment in the Myst series of games entitled Myst IV: Revelation, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (cinematic music), Dungeon Siege II promotional trailers, Wrath Unleashed and BioWare's upcoming RPG blockbuster, among others.

Jack Wall is Senior Director and Co-founder of The Game Audio Network Guild (G.A.N.G.), a non-profit organization established to promote excellence in interactive audio by providing information, instruction, resources, guidance and enlightenment not only to its members, but to publishers, developers and listeners throughout the world. Mary DeMarle - Writer-Designer

Mary is a freelance writer-designer whom Ubisoft hired to create THE MYST 4: REVELATION story and to write all dialogs and narrative text encountered in the game.

How long have you worked at Ubisoft?
Mary's freelance writing career spans more than 15 years -- the last five have been exclusively dedicated to writing for games. (Two of her previous game writing credits include MYST 3: EXILE and HOMEWORLD 2.)

General Background:
Mary graduated from Syracuse University with a BS in Television, Radio, and Film Production. Shortly after graduation she moved to Hollywood and began working for the cartoon studio, Hanna-Barbera (creators of The Flintstones). She began freelance writing for the entertainment industry four years later; then in 1997, she switched to games by joining up with the now-defunct game development studio, Presto Studios. It was at Presto that Mary designed and wrote the award-winning story for MYST 3: EXILE.

Best part of the project:
Excluding the opportunity to work in the Myst universe yet one more time? For Mary, the best part of working on MYST 4: REVELATION was its fabulous game design team. The creativity, joy, and excitement brought to the table every day by Patrick Fortier and his design team was positively exhilarating.

Hardest part of the project:
Having to watch so many great ideas get simplified or cut out of the game entirely as the reality of schedules and budgets hit. When you work in games, you always expect it to happen - you even know that the final product will be that much better once only its strongest parts remain. But it still hurts to see some of those great ideas fall.

Favorite (pre-Revelation) Myst game?
Impossible to choose! Every one of them was special in its own right.

Favorite quote?
"I have a dream today." - Martin Luther King

Favorite food?
Saag panir. Oh! And New York-style cheesecake. (Though definitely not together.)

Favorite movie?
This year? PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. Johnny Depp is a god!

Anything else to say to the community?
If anyone ever does get Cyan's elevator to descend to those lowest level floors, I want pictures!!! :-)

Patrick Fortier - Creative Director/Lead Game Designer

How long have you worked at Ubisoft?
I've been on the Revelation team since the start of the project.

General background?
Long loving relationship with the video-game medium since I was a child (even though my parents didn't let me play…), got a degree in Translation and then joined Ubisoft as a game designer right after because I was too passionate about the industry to do anything else.

Best part of the project?
The beginning and the end. The early design meeting and brainstorm sessions, putting the pieces together on paper, and then watching the paper world come to life before your eyes at the end and really seeing it match your initial intentions in terms of atmosphere and emotion.

Hardest part of the project?
Communication on a team of 75 people. Things often get twisted or forgotten and it can create tensions at times.

Favorite (pre-Revelation) Myst game?
Riven.

Favorite quote?
There is no Sanity Clause.

Favorite food?
KFC (I can't eat it without feeling ill, but I love it for some reason).

Favorite movie?
(Hard question) Amadeus.

Anything else to say to the community?
Your dedication & enthusiasm is a constant source of motivation for the Revelation team.

Cyan recently opened a new Until Uru shard! What did you do?

I have been in UU since it began and never left.
I rushed out to reinstall Uru and get into D'mala!
I am planning to install and join the others in the cavern, soon.
I am waiting to see what comes of this news...
What is Until Uru?
